Tulips are considered to be one of the most
beautiful flowers ever to have adorned our planet. With over 150 species and
3000 varieties available, it is important to know when and where to plant these
beautiful flowers. Tulip bulbs are known to be almost perfectly proportioned
with most of them having one flower from one bud growing; however, some are
known to even have 4 on a single stem. They bloom for a very short period
during the spring season and are available in every colour.
How to plant these bulbs:
1. Bulbs that you purchase in autumn already have their embryo flower placed inside it. They should be firm and fat instead of sloppy or droopy.
2. Although you will purchase them between August to
September however it’s best to plant them in October – November.
3. It is important to keep the tulip bulbs really
dry before planting; hence it is important to store them in paper bags and
store them in the crisper of your fridge rather than keeping them in plastic
bags in the fridge only.
4. It is important for them to get plenty of
sunshine else they will not grow well and will wither away before the true
bloom. Whichever way you choose to keep the tulip bulbs near the window, you
will notice that they will twist and bloom in the direction of the sun.
5. If you are planting them in the soil directly,
make sure that it is treated well and is pest free. Plant them at equal
distance, a couple of inches apart from each other.
6. Add around 8 to 10 bulbs in a row in the soil
which is well treated with manure and compost or organic fertilizer.
7. Make sure that the tulip bulbs are pointy and
facing down as they will bloom better in the spring season. Cover them with
shredded leaves to protect them. Water them well and have proper drainage
around it.
Whether you purchase the bulbs or flowers online
or buy them from your local florist, it is important to care well for your
Tulips and their bulbs.
